Independiente (Argentina) vs Fortaleza (Brazil)
Independiente starts the road to their third Copa Sudamericana title (champions in 2010 and 2017) after finishing last league season in seventh place. This term, the club is struggling. In fact, they lost 1-0 at arch-rivals Racing Club last Sunday in spite of playing with 11 men against nine during most of the second half. Therefore, El Rojo claimed a single victory in their last seven matches (drawing two and losing four) and are languishing in 14th spot of the Superliga table. They won their last home match (over Rosario Central 5-0) to stop a three-game losing run at Libertadores de America Stadium.
Fortaleza is living a dream. In 2017, they were playing in the third level of Brazilian football. Now, after two consecutive promotions and a remarkable campaign in the top flight (ending up in ninth), the team are about to make their continental debut. Last Saturday, they beat Santa Cruz 3-0 at home in the Copa do Nordeste (a state cup in which they claimed five points in three rounds). O Leao also started the Ceara State Championship in perfect style, winning both games so far. In total, Fortaleza is on 12 matches unbeaten (eight wins, four draws), five of which were on the road (two victories in that span).
Independiente needs to win this after the terrible performance last weekend as fans will be extremely angry, and I expect an open game where the visitors could use the open spaces to get the away goal that would be great for them.
